I don't get how fans of TDS can be upset, is it because the artwork was done by the same guy yet the album sounds more like PHM and not quite as fundamentally jarring as TDS? My two fave NIN full length releases are Pretty Hate Machine followed by The Downward Spiral, well Hesitation Marks just landed squarely in at #3 - it's fucking wicked! I am so suprised by how much I love this album because to be honest I never really felt The Slip or Year Zero like I did PHM > With Teeth and especially 1990 > 1995 NIN. I'm just totally in awe of the new material and I was not expecting to be blown away like I am.
I haven't paid much attention to the lyrics yet, just the music and the melodies, but I love the first three runs through the album so far. For me if you loved NIN most in the same time period that I did, this album is a gift. I'm way more excited now to see them in October knowing how great the new tunes are and hope they play loads of the new stuff.
