I’ve enjoyed reading all the reviews posted here, both the positive and the negative. I know that everyone experiences their own thing when listening to an album. It’s a personal and subjective experience, to each their own. But from most of the reviews here, it seems like the majority of people around these parts really dig Hesitation Marks, so way to go Trent (tu).
What happens when we get a Trent that is,
Fitter
Happier
More productive
Comfortable
Not drinking too much
Regular exercise at the gym 3 days a week
Getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries
At ease... ???
Apparently Hesitation Marks is what happens.
I very much like the visual presentation of Hesitation Marks. Russell Mills is back in action here and the art simply kicks ass. The cover art, the book art, the disc art, it is all beautiful and I’d give it an A+. This album may have my favorite album art for any NIN album.
Listening to Hesitation Marks, for me the music takes center stage. It is catchy with its layers of electronic melodies and rhythmic sounds, it’s even danceable at times. The music here comes across as less abrasive and more polished than some previous NIN albums, and overall it works fairly well. Do I think that this is the best music that has ever come from NIN? No way. Is this my personal favorite music that Trent has ever made? Nope. But for what it is, the music across the board holds its own. As an electronic album that has a pop vibe, it is pretty good. Simply put, no music on the album strikes me as being bad.
I felt the lyrics weren’t nearly as interesting as the music on this one. Thematically it feels like Trent spends most of the album reflecting on himself/NIN. Often times I found the lyrics to be a bit too simple, repetitive, and emotionally subdued for my taste. I’m not saying that the lyrics and themes of Hesitation Marks are terrible or bad... in fact it seems like plenty of people out there connect with them just fine, and again, to each their own. It is just for me personally, what is here doesn’t do much to evoke emotion, no real highs or lows. The words never grab me or demand that I really pay attention. Lyrically and thematically, it just doesn’t come across as being among Trent’s more compelling works.
Overall I’d say that Hesitation Marks falls comfortably in the range of good. The art is great. The music is all shined up, it’s catchy, easy to listen to, and at times easy to get lost in. The lyrics are at times repetitive and feel a bit frugal. Thematically Hesitation Marks seems to simply be Trent’s take on Trent and NIN.
